"The fundamental principles of our religion are the testimony of the Apostles and Prophets, concerning Jesus Christ, that He died, was buried, and rose again the third day, and ascended into heaven; and all other things which pertain to our religion are only appendages to it."

The One-ness of God

LDS Beliefs

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in no way needs to justify from the Bible that our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ are two distinct persons.  The Church is built upon the fact that they both—at the same time—appeared to Joseph Smith in the spring of 1820.  If that one fact is not true, then the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has nothing to stand on; it is foundational to the Church of Jesus Christ.

Nevertheless, since you may not at this time believe Joseph Smith's story, and since the focus of this site is to determine whether or not "Mormons" are Christian, and if "Mormon" beliefs are biblical, we’ll look at what the Bible says.  Let's begin by answering a few questions:

Do "Mormons" believe that God is one God?

   Yes, "Mormons" are monotheistic.

Do "Mormons" believe that God is three separate and distinct beings (The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit)?

   Yes.

And "Mormons" claim that the Bible agrees with this?

   Yes.

How can this be?

The answers are found in the Bible.

One-ness.  What Doesn’t it Mean to Be "One"

It’s critical that we talk about "one-ness" in the scriptures.  What does it mean to be one?  Better yet, let’s start out with what it doesn’t mean.

It does not mean that you are one being.  How do we know this?  Let’s read from John 17 in the New Testament:

John 17: 11, 21-23

11 And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.

21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:

23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.

When Jesus said "that they may be one, as we are" he was not talking about being one physical body, whether in this life or in the next.   Is Jesus' plea to Heavenly Father that our physical bodies become one single body and literally move and be one person?  No, that’s ridiculous.  Neither is Jesus talking about His and His Father’s physical bodies being one.  Do we become one physical body in the resurrection?  Of course not—we are resurrected as ourselves, except with individual, purified, glorified bodies.  Many resurrected individuals have been seen, including Jesus (see Matthew 27:52-53, 1 Corinthians 15:3-8).  It has never even been suggested in scripture that they were one physical body in the resurrection.

So in the passage "that they may be one, as we are" Jesus is talking about spiritual oneness.  Jesus and His Father are one in spirit and one in will.  Jesus lived perfectly the will of His Father and His God; Jesus would never do anything against His Father's will. We can be one while at the same time being separate persons.  Similarly, Jesus and "[His] God" (see John 20:17 below) can be (and are) one while at the same time separate persons.

Jesus Prayed to His Father; Referred to His Father and His God

Before His death, Jesus not only prayed to His God, but acknowledged that His God did not seem to be with Him as he had in the past:

Matthew 27:46

46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani, that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

After His resurrection, Jesus spoke of ascending up to His God and Father:

John 20:17

17 Jesus saith unto her [Mary Magdalene], Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.

Remember, at this point, Jesus was a resurrected physical Being saying that He was going to ascend to another place to His Father.  If Jesus Christ is God (which He is) and he has a God (which he said he does), that adds up to two personages.  But if those two personages are one in spirit, then are they not one God?  Jesus Himself said he was one with the father:

John 10:30

30 I and my Father are one.

One is not always a Physical One

If you always take the word "one" in the Bible as meaning a physical oneness, then you must also believe the people spoken of in Acts 4:32 literally shared the same heart organ and had the same soul:

Acts 4:32

32 And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.

...and perhaps also you believe there is a large, invisible blood vessel that connects all of our circulatory systems, so that we literally share the same blood:

Acts 17:26

26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

...and maybe you even believe that we lose our gender (and physical separateness) when we become Christian—that we literally are no longer men and women:

Galatian 3:28

28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

...and you believe that Paul wanted us to all combine our minds into a single physical mind and our mouths literally into one physical mouth so that we can be unified in prayer unto God:

Romans 15:6

6 That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

...and again with the single physical mind:

2 Corinthians 13:11

11 Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you.

OK, the point has been made.  Obviously the word "one" in the scriptures is not always a numerical/physical one.

But the Old Testament says "One God"

It is true that the Old Testament says that there is one God (as does the New Testament and as do we!).  Remember, those of us that believe that Jesus is God and that His Father, a separate being, is God still believe they are one God!  Let’s look at one of the most oft quoted passages:

As mentioned most people that quote this passage usually stop after verse 8.  But to get the full context of verses 6 and 8 you must read verses 9, 10, and 11.  Those last verses explain why it was even necessary to talk about the Lord being one.  The people of the time were being influenced to bow down to false gods and idols.  The Lord is saying that there is one God (not one being) to worship (not gods of wood and stone), and that was the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.  It was a reminder not to have any other gods or idols besides God.

Isaiah 43:10-12

10 Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.

11 I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour.

12 I have declared, and have saved, and I have shewed, when there was no strange god among you: therefore ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, that I am God.

People often quote Isaiah 43:10-11.  They don’t read verse 12, which adds a lot to the meaning of the scripture.  Why is he talking about a god (in NIV it is lowercase) being formed?  Isaiah was living in a time when the people were surrounded by idol worshipping people.  The Israelites were often tempted to bow down to these foreign gods.  (see Isaiah 44:10 where the same language is used about forming a god or idol)

Isaiah 43:12 (NIV)

I have revealed and saved and proclaimed—
I, and not some foreign god among you.
You are my witnesses," declares the LORD, "that I am God.

Deuteronomy 6:4

4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one Lord:

At first this appears that this supports the "one being" concept.  But interestingly, when you look at the Hebrew, it actually supports separate persons.  The Hebrew for Deuteronomy 6:4 (often referred to in Judaism as "the Shema") is "Shema, Israel, Jehovah Elohaynu, Jehovah echod." "Shema" means "Hear".  "Elohaynu" is a plural form of God.  "Echod" in Hebrew indicates multiple things existing in a bonded relationship.  If the author had wanted to indicate oneness in number he would have used the word Yachid instead of Echod.  Echod is used, for example, when the Lord commands man and wife to be "one" flesh.  So this scripture could be validly translated "Hear Israel, Yahweh our Gods are one [as man and wife, though separate, are one] Yahweh"  (There is still much debate about the meaning of Yahweh.  There is a lot of consensus that it means something close to "Self-existing")

Isaiah 45:20-22

20 ¶ Assemble yourselves and come; draw near together, ye that are escaped of the nations: they have no knowledge that set up the wood of their graven image, and pray unto a god that cannot save.

21 Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told it from that time? have not I the LORD? and there is no God else beside me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside me.

22 Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.

Again, as verse 20 attests, Isaiah is speaking in a time when people are bowing down to gods that are graven images of wood and stone.  And when our belief says that God is one, we just don’t have a problem with this scripture.  There is no God besides God because Jesus, the Father and the Holy Spirit are one, just as we can be one with them as Jesus prayed we would.  For this world, salvation comes through one, which is Jesus Christ.  There is one Savior for us and no other.  Verse 22 makes it clear that the Lord is talking to the (polytheistic) nations of the earth.

Isaiah 46:9

9 Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me,

But read the verses before verse 9.

5 ¶ To whom will ye liken me, and make me equal, and compare me, that we may be like?

6 They lavish gold out of the bag, and weigh silver in the balance, and hire a goldsmith; and he maketh it a god: they fall down, yea, they worship.

7 They bear him upon the shoulder, they carry him, and set him in his place, and he standeth; from his place shall he not remove: yea, one shall cry unto him, yet can he not answer, nor save him out of his trouble.

8 Remember this, and shew yourselves men: bring it again to mind, O ye transgressors.

9 Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me,

These words are saying that the people make gods of gold to worship.  But there is one God that we should worship, and that God is the Father of Heaven and his Son, Jesus the Messiah, and the Holy Spirit, who were explicitly shown to be separate entities in the New Testament because they were seen/heard separate from each other.

The following scripture just reemphasizes that people are prone to worship the works of their own hands rather than the one true God and His perfect Son who thought it not robbery to be equal with Him. [REF to Philippians 2:5-11]

Isaiah 2:8,18

8 Their land also is full of idols; they worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made:

18 And the idols he shall utterly abolish.

Biblical Scriptures on God's Oneness

The following table contains Biblical scriptures that speak to the one-ness of God. Scriptures that have an icon in the "Separate Beings" seem to suggest that they are separate beings. Scriptures with an icon in the "One Being (Trinity)" column seem to suggest they are one being, or at least the scripture has been used by many to try to prove this. If there is something that calls this into question, the icon will have a "?" next to it, with notes explaining why in the Notes column.

Genesis 1:26

26 ¶ And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

Who was God talking to?  We don’t know if it was Jesus.  But we can assume that whoever it was, it was not a "non-God", since the scriptures say that "God created man in his own image" (i.e. man was not created in the image of God and a unicorn, for example)

Then God [plural Elohim] said, Let Us [plural pronoun] make man in our [plural pronoun] image, according to our [plural pronoun] likeness...

Genesis 3:22

And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:

Then Yahweh God [plural Elohim] said, Behold, the man has become like one of Us [plural pronoun], knowing good and evil...

Genesis 11:7

Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.

Come, let Us [plural pronoun] go down and there confuse [plural verb form] their language, so that they will not understand one another’s speech.

Deuteronomy 4:27-31, 35, 39

27 And the LORD shall scatter you among the nations, and ye shall be left few in number among the heathen, whither the LORD shall lead you.

28 And there ye shall serve gods, the work of men’s hands, wood and stone, which neither see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell.

29 But if from thence thou shalt seek the LORD thy God, thou shalt find him, if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul.

  30 When thou art in tribulation, and all these things are come upon thee, even in the latter days, if thou turn to the LORD thy God, and shalt be obedient unto his voice;

31 (For the LORD thy God is a merciful God;) he will not forsake thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he sware unto them.

...

35 Unto thee it was shewed, that thou mightest know that the LORD he is God; there is none else beside him.

...

39 Know therefore this day, and consider it in thine heart, that the LORD he is God in heaven above, and upon the earth beneath: there is none else.

As is almost always the case when the Old Testament writings mention there being "one God" (see v. 35), it is said in the context of the other gods of other nations (see v. 28).  In this beautiful scripture God demonstrates that he will never forsake his people if they will turn to Him, away from the other Gods.  And we know—because the New Testament makes it abundantly clear—that God is our Heavenly Father and His Son Jesus Christ and the Holy Ghost, who, while three beings, are yet one God.

Incidentally, Moses 1:6 says "...there is no God beside me...".  Yes, our own scriptures say this.  But remember these scriptures were brought forth by someone--Joseph Smith--that unambiguously said that our Father in Heaven and Jesus His Son are two separate beings.  Did Joseph then contradict himself?  No.  Because The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost--while separate beings--are yet one God.

Deuteronomy 6:4

4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one Lord:

See explanation above about how this is the same Hebrew word God uses when commanding that Man and Wife be "one flesh" (two become one yet remain two individuals)

Deuteronomy 32:12,15-21,36-39

12 So the LORD alone did lead him, and there was no strange god with him.

...

15 ¶ But Jeshurun waxed fat, and kicked: thou art waxen fat, thou art grown thick, thou art covered with fatness; then he forsook God which made him, and lightly esteemed the Rock of his salvation.

16 They provoked him to jealousy with strange gods, with abominations provoked they him to anger.

17 They sacrificed unto devils, not to God; to gods whom they knew not, to new gods that came newly up, whom your fathers feared not.

18 Of the Rock that begat thee thou art unmindful, and hast forgotten God that formed thee.

19 And when the LORD saw it, he abhorred them, because of the provoking of his sons, and of his daughters.

20 And he said, I will hide my face from them, I will see what their end shall be: for they are a very froward generation, children in whom is no faith.

21 They have moved me to jealousy with that which is not God; they have provoked me to anger with their vanities: and I will move them to jealousy with those which are not a people; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation.

...

36 For the LORD shall judge his people, and repent himself for his servants, when he seeth that their power is gone, and there is none shut up, or left.

37 And he shall say, Where are their gods, their rock in whom they trusted,

38 Which did eat the fat of their sacrifices, and drank the wine of their drink offerings? let them rise up and help you, and be your protection.

39 See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god with [besides (or "apart from")] me: I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal: neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand.

Note that in verses 37 and 38 he talks contrastingly to the false gods.  So the paraphrase would be "There are no other gods (such as idols) apart from the God of heaven"

[NIV – note that it is not "with me" but "besides me" in this translation]

37 He will say: "Now where are their gods,

the rock they took refuge in,

38 the gods who ate the fat of their sacrifices

and drank the wine of their drink offerings?

Let them rise up to help you!

       Let them give you shelter!

39 "See now that I myself am He!

There is no god besides me.

I put to death and I bring to life,

I have wounded and I will heal,

and no one can deliver out of my hand.

2 Samuel 22:32

32 For who is God, save the LORD? and who is a rock, save our God?

This scripture, paraphrased, might say, "Who is God except Jehovah?" The people of Old Testament times only knew of Jehovah. They were not given everything since they were not ready for the higher. They were given the 10 commandments and the law of Moses. Jesus (Jehovah) came later to give more knowledge and a higher law. He taught us, who were hopefully more ready than our predecessors, of the Father.

1 Kings 8:60

60 That all the people of the earth may know that the LORD is God, and that there is none else.

The first part of the verse is key—he’s saying that all these nations that worship the many false gods may know there is only one God, the God of Heaven.

Isaiah 37:14-23

14 ¶ And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it: and Hezekiah went up unto the house of the LORD, and spread it before the LORD.

15 And Hezekiah prayed unto the LORD, saying,

16 O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, that dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth: thou hast made heaven and earth.

17 Incline thine ear, O LORD, and hear; open thine eyes, O LORD, and see: and hear all the words of Sennacherib, which hath sent to reproach the living God.

18 Of a truth, LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the nations, and their countries,

19 And have cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone: therefore they have destroyed them.

20 Now therefore, O LORD our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the LORD, even thou only.

21 ¶ Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent unto Hezekiah, saying, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Whereas thou hast prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria:

22 This is the word which the LORD hath spoken concerning him; The virgin, the daughter of Zion, hath despised thee, and laughed thee to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem hath shaken her head at thee.

23 Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice, and lifted up thine eyes on high? even against the Holy One of Israel.

This scripture also is talking about the gods of the the kingdoms of the earth.

Isaiah 43:10-15

10 Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.

11 I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour.

12 I have declared, and have saved, and I have shewed, when there was no strange god among you: therefore ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, that I am God.

13 Yea, before the day was I am he; and there is none that can deliver out of my hand: I will work, and who shall let it?

14 ¶ Thus saith the LORD, your redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; For your sake I have sent to Babylon, and have brought down all their nobles, and the Chaldeans, whose cry is in the ships.

15 I am the LORD, your Holy One, the creator of Israel, your King.

Matthew 1:23

23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

This suggests Jesus was God at the time he was on the earth.  And he prayed to His God and referred to the Father as "My God".

Matthew 3:16-17

16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:

17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

Jesus is on the earth.  The Spirit of God descends from Heaven.  And a voice also comes from heaven.

Matthew 6:9

9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

He prays many times to Father who is IN heaven.  (This may be debateable because of "the kingdom of God is within [among] you"-Luke 17:21)  However, he does not say "kingdom of Heaven" but "kingdom of God".  Also John 6:33 suggests that heaven is apart from the earth since Jesus came "down" from there: "33 For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world."  Also see John 6:38.

Matthew 10:32-33

32 Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.

33 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.

Matthew 11:25-27

25 ¶ At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.

26 Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight.

27 All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.

Matthew 10,19,35-35

10 Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.

19 Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.

34 And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him.

35 So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.

Matthew 26:39-42

39 And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.

40 And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour?

41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

42 He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done.

Matthew 26:53

53 Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels?

Mark 10:6-9

6 But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female.

  7 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife;

8 And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh.

9 What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

The principle of one-ness:  Two can be one, but they are still two...and one at the same time.

Mark 12:29-33

29 And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:

30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.

31 And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.

32 And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he:

33 And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.

This is the Shema.  See discussions on the Shema and one-ness.

Mark 14:36

36 And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.

Jesus submits His will to His Father’s will

Mark 16:19

19 ¶ So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.

Luke 10:21-22

21 ¶ In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight.

22 All things are delivered to me of my Father: and no man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him.

Luke 22:29

  29 And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me;

Luke 23:46

46 ¶ And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.

John 4:24

24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

If God (the Father) is a Spirit (only) and Jesus Christ is physical (since he was resurrected), and the Holy Ghost is a Spirit, they would be three separate beings.

John 5:17-37

17 ¶ But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.

18 Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.

19 Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.

20 For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.

21 For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.

22 For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:

23 That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.

24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.

  26 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;

27 And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.

28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,

29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

30 I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.

31 If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.

32 ¶ There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.

33 Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth.

34 But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved.

35 He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.

36 ¶ But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.

37 And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.

Interesting that the Father, at some point, had given Jesus the gift of having life in himself (v26)

v. 37: Jesus speaks these words to the Jews that are accusing him of doing something wrong on the Sabbath.

John 6:32-33

32 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.

33 For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.

John 6:38-40

38 For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.

39 And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.

40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

John 6:46

46 Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father.

John 6:57

57 As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me.

John 6:69

69 And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.

John 7:16-18

16 Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.

17 If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.

18 He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.

John 8:15-16

15 Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man.

16 And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me.

John 8:18

18 I am one that bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me.

?

John 8:19

19 Then said they unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye neither know me, nor my Father: if ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also.

You could say: "See?  Knowing One means knowing the Other.  That must mean they’re the same."

But this is weak because the One-ness doctrine also allows for this, even though they are separate Beings.

John 8:26-29

26 I have many things to say and to judge of you: but he that sent me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him.

27 They understood not that he spake to them of the Father.

28 Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things.

29 And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.

Jesus’ Father taught him

John 8:38

38 I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father.

John 8:42

42 Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.

John 8:54

54 Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God:

John 10:17-18

17 Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.

18 No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.

Does one being command itself?

John 10:30

30 I and my Father are one

Any scriptures that talk about "one-ness" are dismissed by the first argument made above regarding John 17: 11, 21-23

John 10:36-7

36 Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God?

37 If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not.

Does one sanctify himself?  Does one send himself?

John 10:38

38 But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him.

This is "one-ness".  See notes on John 17:21-23

John 11:41

41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.

Does one being pray to Himself?

John 12:27-8

27 Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour.

28 Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.

The Father speaks from heaven while the Son is praying on the earth.  There is a response from One Being to Another.

John 12:49-50

49 For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.

50 And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.

The Father "sent" His son.  The Father "commanded" His Son.  The Father "said" things to the Son.

John 13:1-3

1 Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.

  2 And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him;

  3 Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God;

John 14:7-11

7 If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.

8 Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us.

9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?

10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.

11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works’ sake.

[The next few verses I cite from the same chapter dismiss this one.  See notes on John 14:20, for a correlation to verse 10]

If they were one Being, wouldn’t he have said in v10 "I am the Father, and the Father is me"

The Father and Son are so similar and so connected.  See for example Hebrews 1:3.  The Son appears very much like His Father.

John 14:12

12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

John 14:16-17

 16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

v. 17: Interesting, in other places Jesus says he has to go in order for the comforter to come.  And yet here it says that the Spirit (of truth) "dwelleth with you".

John 14:20

20 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.

We know that we will be resurrected and have bodies that are physically separate from God.  Philippians 3:21 says: "Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself."  Our body will not be Christ’s—it will be like His...i.e. separate.  So for us to be "in" Christ doesn’t mean to be one with Him in body.  It must mean to be one in Spirit.  So also, then, for Christ to be "in my Father" doesn’t mean for Him to be one with the Father in physical body.

John 14:24

24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father’s which sent me.

If God were one being, how could the word not be Jesus’ word?

John 14:26

26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

Does one being send Himself?

John 14:28

Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.

Some say "greater" means "above"...

John 14:31

31 But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do.

Speaks in the 3rd person. Does one being give Himself commandments?

John 15:1-2

1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.

2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.

John 15:9-10

9 As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.

10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.

John 15:15

15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.

John 15:21

21 But all these things will they do unto you for my name’s sake, because they know not him that sent me.

?

John 15:23

23 He that hateth me hateth my Father also.

This is weak in supporting the Trinitarian notion. They are one God (though separate Beings); of course people will hate one if they hate the other.

John 15:26

26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

"...whom I will send unto you from the Father..."  This could be seen as supporting the idea that Jesus is the Father.  But it is by no means strong, since Jesus knew and had said that he would be with the Father and be one with the Father.

"the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:"  This has two references to separateness: 1. the Spirit proceeds from the Father.  2. the Spirit testifies of Jesus

John 16:7

7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

Trinitarians could say that the Holy Ghost could not come to His followers unless Jesus left His physical state and then was able to come as the Holy Ghost.

There are problems with that, however.  One is that Jesus says I will "send him unto you", which indicates Jesus being in one place and the Holy Ghost going from Him the place Jesus sent Him.  Another is that there is no indication anywhere that Jesus goes from his resurrected state to another spiritual state.

John 16:10

 10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;

John 16:13

13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

"Hear" from whom? Certainly not an angel or some other being. It could only mean God.  So the passage could be accurately rephrased, "...for he shall not speak of himself, but whatsoever he shall hear from the Father, that shall he speak"

John 16:27-28

27 For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.

28 I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.

John 16:32

32 Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.

John 17:1

1 These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:

Jesus looks up to Heaven and prays to the Father.  Does He really pray to Himself?

John 17:3, 18, 25

3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

18 As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.

25 O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me.

Sent means to have one go do something apart from the one that sent.  Does one send himself?  It would be against the nature of the word "send".

John 17:21-23

That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:

I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.

Is Jesus praying "that they all may be one personage as we are one personage"?  Do we physically become a single personage?  What about the resurrection, when we receive our own separate, glorified body?

No, I think he’s saying, as he clarifies in 23, "that they may be made perfect in one"  That they may be unified in one spirit, in a sense of love, thinking, brotherhood/sisterhood, etc.

By the way, was He praying to Himself?

See also 1 Corinthians 6:17

John 18:11

11 Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?

Does one give himself something?

John 20:17

17 Jesus saith unto her [Mary Magdalene], Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.

A resurrected physical being (which is God) saying that he was going to ascend to another place to His Father and to His God.

Acts 2:36

36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.

God made Jesus (who is the Creator, i.e. God) Lord and Christ.

Acts 4:10

10 Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.

Romans 1:7-9

7 To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.

8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world.

  9 For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers;

Romans 4:24

22 And therefore it [his faith?] was imputed to him for righteousness.

  23 Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him;

  24 But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him [The Father] that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;

25 Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

Romans 15:5-6

5 Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus:

6 That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Corinthians 6:17

But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit.

Oneness is a oneness of spirit.  When we are joined to the Lord, are we joined to His marvelous resurrected body?  My belief is that we are not.  But I hope and pray that I will be permitted, as the Twelve Apostles were permitted, to kneel and touch the scars in His hands and feet.  What a humbling moment that will be.

John 6:56 says "He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him."

Again, oneness is oneness of Spirit.  Did the apostles, when they ate the bread, become physically in him?  No, the connection was spiritual.

1 Corinthians 8:4-6

4 As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one.

5 For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,)

6 But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.

One God (the Father) and one Lord Jesus Christ (who is also God)

1 Corinthians 15:23-28

23 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ’s at his coming.

24 Then cometh the end, when he [Christ] shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power.

25 For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.

26 The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.

27 For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith all things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted, which did put all things under him.

28 And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all.

2 Corinthians 1:2-3

2 Grace be to you and peace from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

  3 Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort;

2 Corinthians 11:31

31 The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which is blessed for evermore, knoweth that I lie not.

Galatians 1:1-5

1 Paul, an apostle, (not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ, and God the Father, who raised him from the dead;)

2 And all the brethren which are with me, unto the churches of Galatia:

3 Grace be to you and peace from God the Father, and from our Lord Jesus Christ,

4 Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:

5 To whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Ephesians 1:3-6

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:

4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:

5 Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,

6 To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.

Jesus has a God, and Jesus has a Father.  And Jesus is God!

Ephesians 1:15-23

15 Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints,

  16 Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers;

17 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:

18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,

19 And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,

20 Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,

21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:

22 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,

23 Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.

Paraphrased: "God raised Jesus and set him on his right hand"

Ephesians 3:7-14

7 Whereof I [Paul] was made a minister, according to the gift of the grace of God given unto me by the effectual working of his power.

  8 Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ;

9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:

10 To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God,

11 According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord:

12 In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him.

13 Wherefore I desire that ye faint not at my tribulations for you, which is your glory.

14 For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

Ephesians 6:23

23 Peace be to the brethren, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Philippians 1:2

2 Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

Philippians 2:5-11

5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:

7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:

8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:

  10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

When it says Jesus was "in the form of God", I take that to mean that Jesus was not God (the Father) but was in God the Father’s likeness

Colossians 1:2-3

2 To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ which are at Colosse: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

3 We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you,

Colossians 1:12-19

12 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:

13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:

14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:

15 Who is the image of the *invisible God, the firstborn of every creature:

16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.

  19 For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;

*Note: the invisible God is seeable:

John 6:46 Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father.

Colossians 3:17 (NKJV)

17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

1 Thessalonians 1:1

1 Paul, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians which is in God the Father and in the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Thessalonians 3:11-13

11 Now God himself and our Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, direct our way unto you.

12 And the Lord make you to increase and abound in love one toward another, and toward all men, even as we do toward you:

13 To the end he may stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints.

2 Thessalonians 1:1-2,11-12

1 Paul, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:

2 Grace unto you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

11 Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power:

12 That the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and ye in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

2 Thessalonians 2:16-17

16 Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace,

17 Comfort your hearts, and stablish you in every good word and work.

1 Timothy 1:1

  1 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ, which is our hope;

This scripture is flagged as one supporting the Trinitarian notion.  However, it may only be speaking of Jesus, who, from a non-Trinitarian standpoint is also God.  Though separate beings, yet they are one God.  The commandment to be an apostle may only come from Jesus and not from the Father. (see Philippians 2:6, Hebrews 1:8)

1 Timothy 1:2

2 Unto Timothy, my own son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.

1 Timothy 2:5

  5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

2 Timothy 1:2

2 To Timothy, my dearly beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

?

Titus 1:3

  3 But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour;

See note on 1 Timothy 1:1.  This is not a problem.  Jesus thought it not robbery to be equal with God (Philippians 2:6, Hebrews 1:8)

Titus 1:4

4 To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour.

Philemon 1:3

3 Grace to you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Hebrews 1:1-13

1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,

  2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

  3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

4 Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.

5 For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?

6 And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.

7 And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire.

8 But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.

9 Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

10 And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands:

  11 They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment;

12 And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail.

13 But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool?

In verse 2: does one inherit something from Himself?

In verse 3 it speaks of Jesus sitting next to God, not sitting down as God (the Father).

In verse 8 God refers to Jesus as God.

In verse 9 God refers to Himself as "thy God" to Jesus.

Hebrews 5:5

5 So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee.

Hebrews 12:2

2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

1 Peter 1:3

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

1 John 1:3 3 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.

1 John 4:14-15

14 And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.

15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.

He didn’t send Himself; he sent the Son.

2 John 1:3

3 Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.

Revelation 1:1-6

1 The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John:

2 Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw.

3 Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.

  4 JOHN to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne;

5 And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,

6 And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

Revelation 3:12

12 Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name. (this is Jesus speaking—see v. 5)

Revelation 3:21

21 To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne. (this is Jesus speaking—see v. 5)

LDS Scriptures saying Jesus is the Father

There are several scriptures of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints that portray Jesus as "The Father:

Ether 4:12

12 And whatsoever thing persuadeth men to do good is of me; for good cometh of none save it be of me. I am the same that leadeth men to all good; he that will not believe my words will not believe me—that I am; and he that will not believe me will not believe the Father who sent me. For behold, I am the Father, I am the light, and the life, and the truth of the world.

Jesus does say "I am the Father", that is true. But note the words in the sentence just before that: "the Father who sent me".  So Jesus is the Father of us because of His atonement, but He also has a Father that sent him here.

Chapter 15 of Mosiah is also a confusing one to some. It seems to say, in some points, that Jesus is the Father. Look at verse 4. Speaking of Jesus and Our Father in Heaven, it says:

Mosiah 15:4

4 And they are one God, yea, the very Eternal Father of heaven and of earth.

Our critics may point these out, saying we contradict ourselves in that our scriptures themselves say that Jesus is the Father. But we know it is because there is a closeness between the two beings (Jesus and Father in Heaven) that they truly are One God. I believe it is a closeness that we in this world find hard to comprehend.

We have no doubt about their individuality because these same scriptures were translated by one who saw them appear together at the same time as separate and individual beings.

Conclusion

The purpose of the above discussion is not to try to convince you from the Bible that our Father in heaven and Jesus are separate beings. Our purpose is always to try to break down the walls that prevent you from asking God if Joseph Smith really saw what he said he saw....to give you enough evidence that you will say, "OK, Joseph's story about seeing two personages standing above him is more plausible than I thought it even could be--I will ask God if it's true."  Please do ask Him (assuming you are ready to act according to the answer you receive).

Notes

The term "Son" as an indication of a state of existence

It has been said the term "Son" (in the context of Jesus as Son of the Father) is an indication of state of existence as opposed to a relationship.  Is this true?  The answer is no because even after the resurrection and glorification, he is still referred to as "Son" (see 2 John 1:3,9 and 1 John 1:3 below).  The Father/Son relationships still persists today!

2 John 1:3,9

3 Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.

9 Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.

1 John 1:3

3 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.
